Shintai Jody Dungay

Shintai first encountered Zen in 1991 when she signed up for a one day workshop on how to meditate at Dharma Rain Zen Center. At the time she was simply looking for a way to reduce her stress, but over the course of several years the teachings and the practice led her to engage deeply in the Soto Zen tradition.

She received Jukai (Giving and Receiving of the 16 Bodhisattva Precepts) in 1993 and became a formal student of Gyokuko Carlson Roshi (Co-Abbott of Dharma Rain Zen Center) in 1997. Shintai was a resident at Dharma Rain from 1999-2001 and again in 2010. Her first time in residency coincided with Domyo’s and the two have been practicing together ever since.

Shintai received Lay Dharma Transmission from Gyokuko Carlson in 2011. Lay transmission in the Dharma Cloud Lineage, similar to transmission to priests, is a recognition of mature and integrated practice and an authorization to function as an independent Zen teacher, including giving precepts and taking formal students.

Shintai works fulls time as a speech-language pathologist providing services for young children and their families. Integrating full time work with being active in a Zen sangha has been much of the focus of Shintai’s practice.
