The Term:
We will be using Dogen’s essay “Only Buddha and Buddha” to expand and challenge our ideas about what a buddha is, the nature of realization, and our own true body (among other things!). Participants will regularly read the text, and take turns presenting sections of it at our monthly meetings.
In addition, we will be engaging in the self-study (“becoming familiar with the self”) that leads to forgetting the self and being actualized by the myriad things. We will focus particularly on identifying the internal obstacles or issues that arise for us in our everyday lives, exploring what underlying delusions might be causing unecessary suffering for self and other. This study will take the form of an online collaborative journal, leading in to peer check-ins and discussion during our regular monthly meetings.
