Sandokai Study Group

Founder's Day Ceremony
Guest Talk ~ Thomas Bruner

Sekito Kisen’s 8th century Sandokai (The harmony of difference and sameness) is a fundamental text of the Sōtō Zen tradition and is chanted daily in many temples around the world.

Let’s get together and explore some of the rich metaphor and imagery of the poem! We can discuss how the text both reflects and impacts our practice. The discussion group is designed for beginners and established practitioners alike.

For 5 Thursday nights in July (7/1, 7/8, 7/15, 7/22, 7/29) from 7:30-9pm PDT Mick will lead a line-by-line discourse on the poem fueled by commentaries by Shohaku Okumura (Living by Vow) and Suzuki Roshi (Branching Streams Flow in the Darkness).

No experience with the poem or commentaries are needed. Come join in a opportunity to experience the beauty of Sandokai!  Also come join for an opportunity to experience the Sangha Treasure through hearing others’ experiences the poem!

Nightly Schedule:
7:30 Chanting & Zazen (Sandokai, naturally)

8-9 Discussion and analysis

If you have any questions, feel free to reach out!

The study group will happen at the same Zoom as our other events, with the same password. It will be held from 7:30-9:30 Pacific Time.
