A Zen retreat can be a life-changing experience. At a retreat we pay mindful attention throughout the day to our meditation, our breath, chanting, silent work, and a silent meal. We slow down, but in the midst of discipline, our minds and bodies have a chance to catch up with each other.

Bright Way Zen usually holds one-day retreats in January, April, and October. Please visit the Event Calendar or click on “Recurring Events (see all)” at the top of the page for more information. Note: Before registering for retreats it is important that you have experience with meditation and will feel comfortable meditating for a total of about 3-4 hours during the retreat (in 20-30 minute blocks; chairs will be available). If you do not have experience with meditation, please come to one of our regular meetings first (arrive 30 minutes early and you can receive a brief introduction to Zen meditation).

You are welcome to drop in for a few periods of zazen without registering, but please register if one or more of the following are true:

  • You want to participate in the whole retreat
  • You’ll be there for the 10:15am work period (helps us plan enough work assignments)
  • You will be staying for Mondo Practice (a formal question & answer ceremony) in the afternoon. You must participate in the full retreat in order to stay for mondo. Those who have witnessed the ceremony before are encouraged to present a verse from the retreat text, and those participating for the first time serve a valuable role as questioners.

To register, click here. If you will be there for lunch, bring your own (vegetarian) bag lunch.
