Mon. evening, August 23rd – Sat. morning, August 28th, 2021
Attending retreat is an extremely valuable way to deepen your zazen and build connections with Sangha. Although our retreat will not technically be a sesshin (in that it is not cloistered or residential), it will have many things in common with sesshin. Click here to read more about sesshin.
The retreat will begin Monday evening, August 23rd (with the 7pm evening sit), and wrap up by around 10:30am on Saturday, August 28th. Part time participation is welcome, although we hope you will consider committing to the whole schedule if you’re able.
IN-PERSON OPTIONS FOR PARTICIPATION
Registration for in-person participation is closed. Please note that our Zendo is not open for drop-in participation at this time, sorry! If you have not already registered for in-person participation, please join us online. We will be on our usual Zoom link, and the password is zazen. Click here for more about joining us online.
DAILY SCHEDULE (Monday Evening starting at 7pm, Full Days Tuesday Morning – Friday Evening)
The daily schedule will be more or less as follows. It is highly recommended that whether you are in the Zendo or at home, you maintain as much silence and simplicity as possible throughout your retreat time, including forgoing or mindfully limiting phone, computer, and television use. In this kind of less structured retreat it can be difficult to discipline yourself to put aside your usual distractions, so anticipate this and see if you can set some clear and reasonable intentions for yourself ahead of time. You can communicate these to Domyo if you desire (info[at]brightwayzen.org).
6:30-8:20am – Zazen/Kinhin/Zazen/Posture Adjustment/Zazen
8:20am – Short chanting service (we will listen to a recording or have someone on Zoom lead the chant, in order to avoid chanting together in the Zendo) – Click here for the short morning chanting service or see pages 22 and 3 in the chant book
8:35am – Formal Breakfast – At the Zendo (and at home, obviously): Bring your own food (vegetarian only at the Zendo please)- Click here for formal meal verses, or see page 74 in the chant book
9-10:45am – Silent Work, Study, or Exercise – Choose something simple, quiet, and restorative to do, like cleaning, sewing, gardening, or taking a walk. Also take this time to prepare your lunch. Set a timer for yourself so you don’t have to keep looking at the clock. When the timer goes off, immediately stop your activity and clean up.
At the Zendo: There may be some community work to be done (cleaning, weeding, etc.) Bring/plan on some personal work, study, or exercise in case there isn’t.
11:00-12:30pm – Zazen/Kinhin/Zazen/Kinhin/Zazen
12:35pm – Formal Lunch – At the Zendo (and at home, obviously): Bring your own food (vegetarian only at the Zendo please) – Click here for formal meal verses, or see page 74 in the chant book
1pm – Rest period – Spend this time doing something very quiet and relaxing – take a nap or a leisurely walk, read some Dharma material, or just sit in the sun
2:30pm – Recitation – Click here for a copy of the afternoon recitation or see page 34 in the chant book
2:40-4pm – Zazen/Kinhin/Zazen – Sanzen (interview with teacher) available (In-person interviews will be adapted somehow to allow for distancing/fresh air… stay tuned)
4pm – Dinner break – Take care of personal responsibilities, shower, rest, prepare and eat dinner. At the Zendo: This will probably be a time when you will want to go home, as we do not have cooking or bathing facilities at the building. However, registered participants are welcome to remain on the premises or go get dinner at the stores across the street.
